Two hot, long days of play left the Durango High School boys tennis team exhausted but content after the Pueblo Invitational.
No. 2 singles player Fred Edwards finished second in the tournament, losing 1-6, 6-2 to Cherry Creek in the final. He defeated Air Academy 6-4, 6-2; Cheyenne Mountain 4-6, 6-3, 6-1; and Pueblo West 6-1, 6-0 to reach that stage.
Cherry Creek also knocked No. 1 singles player Ryder Searle out of the winner’s bracket 4-6, 4-6 in the second round. Searle defeated Pueblo East 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round, then won 6-1, 6-1 against Lewis Palmer and 6-1, 4-6, 5-6 over Centennial when the other player had to retire because injury, finishing in fifth.
“I really liked both their ability to focus,” DHS head coach Laura Ehlers said.
No. 3 singles Dylan Blair defeated Centennial 7-6, 6-3; lost to Pueblo Central 0-6. 1-6; lost to Air Academy 1-6, 4-6; and beat Ponderosa 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 to finish seventh.
No. 1 doubles pair Wesley Komick and Liam Millar lost to Cheyenne Mountain 1-6, 1-6; defeated Pueblo East 6-7, 6-4, 6-3; lost to Cheyenne Mountain 0-6, 0-6; and defeated Centennial 6-3, 6-2.
No. 2 doubles tandem Alec Ensign and Drew Downs lost to Ponderosa 6-3, 5-7, 2-6; beat Pueblo Central 6-2, 7-5; lost to Fruita Monument 0-6, 0-6; and lost to Pueblo West 2-6, 2-6.
No. 3 doubles team Tim Martin and Blaise Page lost 6-7, 4-6 to Pueblo Central; lost 0-6, 1-6 against Air Academy; won 6-2, 6-1 against Widefield; and lost to Centennial 6-7, 6-4.
The Demons next will play a dual Tuesday at Montezuma-Cortez.
