Manna fundraiser helps feed those in need

Manna Soup Kitchen, Durango’s nonprofit organization that feeds the hungry, will get a boost this Friday from a group of local jewelers.

Calling it “Ten for Ten,” 10 jewelry designers will celebrate their 10th annual “Style ’n Stones” jewelry show by donating at least 30 percent of their profits to Manna, which provides hot meals and pantry staples to our community’s hungry.

The sale will be held from noon to 6 p.m. in the garden of the Rochester Hotel, 726 East Second Ave. Light refreshments will be served and admission is free.

A month of eating locally

Durango’s annual Eat Local Celebration is sponsoring a month of food-friendly events from Sept. 9 to Oct. 11, hooking up residents with the farmers, brewers and chefs who provide our fresh, local food and drink.

The idea is to celebrate the fertility of our land, the creativity of local producers and chefs and the delicious results that come from eating and drinking local.

This Friday, Carver Brewing Co., 1022 Main Ave., will host a Western Slope fresh hop party with live entertainment from 3 p.m. to close. It will tap pilot batches of wet hop pale ales, featuring Chinook, Cascade and CTZ hops from Highwire Hops Farm.

Growing Partners of Southwest Colorado, a state-funded agency tasked with educating rural and low income families about the importance of fresh food, will host “Produce Bounty,” in which local farms will donate excess produce to needy families, from 9-11 a.m. Sept. 13 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.

Steamworks celebrates 18th anniversary

Another local brewery is throwing itself a birthday party and giving beer drinkers a break in the process. Steamworks Brewing Co., 801 East Second Ave., will celebrate its 18th anniversary Sept. 14, and offer patrons 1996 prices on its craft beers.

Pints will cost $2.50 and pitchers will run $10 all day at the restaurant and brewery.
