The discoloration appearing in junipers may be the consequence of prolonged drought stress and a diminished cellular capacity of anti-oxidative scavenging mechanisms to check the build-up of reactive oxygen species in cellular organelles (chloroplast, mitochondria, peroxisome). If unchecked, the build-up of reactive oxygen species can lead to cellular damage and senescence. Not a good scenario for a plant.
