Durango High School will send five players to the CHSAA 4A Boys Tennis State Championships next week in Pueblo.
The five Demons – one singles player and two doubles teams – earned their way to the state tournament after a strong showing at the 4A Region 8 tournament Thursday in Grand Junction.
Durango’s No. 1 singles player, freshman Ethan Craig, battled back from a first-set loss to advance with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory.
Senior Joe Lawton and freshman Elias Fiddler teamed up to advance in No. 3 doubles with a closely fought three-set win 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
In No. 4 doubles, Corbin Reiter and Noah Pritchard, another senior-freshman duo, earned a state tournament bid with a 7-5, 6-1 win.
The regional tournament was won by Aspen, which will send all 11 players to state. The Durango players all qualified for state in the playback bracket after first-round losses.
The Demons’ opponents at the regional tournament were not available. The team will begin state tournament play next Thursday.
