Demons lacrosse loses its legs to the Skiers

Trailing just 4-3 going to the second half, the Durango Demons’ legs simply were too tired in the second half against the Aspen Skiers.

The Durango High School girls lacrosse team fell 10-6 at Aspen on Friday in the Demons’ season opener. The two teams will play again at 11 a.m. Saturday.

“We ran out of gas in the second half. We were tired and not transitioning offensively the way we should,” DHS head coach Jenni Darlow said. “That hurt us, and we allowed them to get so many more goals in the second half.”

Aspen (2-2) was led by Shannon Turbidy’s five goals.

“She is a senior, and we have played against her for four years now. She has always been really fast and an all-around fantastic player,” Darlow said. “(Saturday) we can’t let her score that many goals on us if we want to win. I know we can change that.”

Seniors scored every goal for DHS on Friday. Tymbree Hawkins recorded a hat trick, Jessie Sutherlin scored two more goals, and Alyssa Swan added one.

DHS junior Megan Pope made eight saves in goal.

Darlow also was impressed with strong defensive play from sophomore Shaelee Hawkins.

“She was a super star, even in a loss,” Darlow said. “She caused six turnovers, had one interception and won five groundballs. When the ball was around her, she made the play.”

Aspen led 3-0 before DHS scored. Darlow hopes her team can get off to a quicker start Saturday morning.

“If we play smart and efficient, hopefully we can save some energy and not be so tired in the end,” she said.
