Durango cyclist Carmen Small is headed to the Los Angeles velodrome to try to make the U.S. team for a World Cup track event, according to a story posted Wednesday on the VeloNews website.

Small, who was third in the time trial at the road World Championships in 2013 and has won two successive golds with teammates in the World team time trials, is eyeing the velodrome as a possible means of making the U.S. Olympic squad for 2016, according to the story.

The plan, says the story by Caley Fretz, is to use Small’s time trial ability on the velodrome at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil in the team pursuit.

In an in-depth midseason interview with The Durango Herald, Small said she still wants an Olympic spot, something that barely eluded her in 2012.

“The ultimate end goal is the Olympics, and hopefully I make the team,” Small told the Herald. “But if not I’ve tried my hardest, and I can retire and be pretty happy about what I’ve done in the sport.”

If Small makes the U.S. track team, she would soon head for Colombia. The UCI Track Cycling World Cup is Jan. 17-18 in Cali, Colombia.
