I am writing this letter to urge my community to vote for Christian Champagne in the Democratic primary. I have had the unique perspective of working with all the district attorneys since my return to my hometown in 1981. The DA’s Office requires leadership that balances compassion and understanding with “being tough on all criminal offenders,” yet treating citizens equally without bias and prejudice.
There are myriad issues in defending and prosecuting crimes, and justice demands appropriate punishment for a criminal defendant. When the criminal is truthful about his or her crime, then the criminal punishment can be tailored to educate, punish and rehabilitate the defendant. The process cannot work without strong and fair leadership.
Many crimes involve misuse of alcohol or drugs, mental health issues, financial struggles and flawed character issues combined with poor choices that result in drastic consequences.
Mr. Champagne is a very good prosecutor and trial attorney, and he deserves the opportunity to be district attorney in Southwest Colorado.
He has made a difference, and I support his enthusiasm and efforts to improve the judicial process, the prosecution and the protection of our community. Please join me in voting for Christian Champagne in the June primary as the Democratic nominee for district attorney.
