The Durango High School lacrosse team headed home from Colorado Springs with two wins under its belt.
One day after beating St. Mary’s 9-6, the Demons won by almost the identical score Friday, as they beat Fountain Valley 10-6.
Durango’s Tommy Rodgers led the way in the scoring department with four goals and an assist. Kyle Robinette had another hat trick with three assists on top of the three-goal effort and also led DHS with six ground balls. T.J. Rifkin scored twice, and Jeb Steigelman pitched in a goal.
“I’m pleased with the trip we had,” Durango head coach John Roboinette said. “Two wins was the goal, and the boys got it done. Fountain Valley was a pretty good team with good fundamentals and really well-coached.”
Durango led 4-1 after the first quarter and 5-2 at halftime. Though the opponents came out strong and outscored the Demons in the third quarter, Durango held strong and closed out the hosts with a two-goal edge in the final quarter.
Eli Cagan got the win in net for the Demons and made six saves in the process. Durango will host Fruita Monument at 7 p.m. Friday under the lights at DHS. The Wildcats beat the Demons 14-12 on April 7, and Durango is looking for revenge.
“It’s a prime time game on a Friday night, so hopefully we’ll get some support out there from the community and the students,” Coach Robinette said. “I think we’ll be ready for (Fruita) this time.”
Girls Soccer
Girls SoccerThe Bayfield Wolverines earned one of their biggest wins of the season Friday at rival Alamosa.
BHS had to face previously undefeated Alamosa in a Class 3A Intermountain League game. The Wolverines shocked the Mean Moose with a 2-1 win.
Alamosa (6-1, 3-1 IML) took a 1-0 lead at halftime thanks to a goal from star Katie Parkins. It was assisted by Lily Lavier.
But BHS struck back in the second half, as Savannah Kaufmann scored on a penalty kick opportunity. Five minutes later, she scored again during the run of play, and that goal stood up to give BHS a huge win and a big confidence booster after a tough loss at Pagosa Springs on Tuesday.
BHS and Alamosa will rematch at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Bayfield High School.
