Bayfield High School improved to 2-0 with a 1-0 victory Tuesday night at Alamosa.
BHS girls soccer head coach Jen Zelinski challenged her team to play big balls on goal from the outside, and the Wolverines answered the challenge.
BHS senior Rickie Baker played a big ball on goal from the outside midway through the first half. It sailed over the goalkeeper’s head, and Sonja Fleming cleaned it up with the game-winning goal.
“I told them to shoot from the outside a lot,” said Zelinski, who referenced the Wolverines’ abundancy of strong legs.
Kailee Millard made six saves in victory, including “a nice punch save” late in the game to preserve the victory.
“We hung back on defense the final 10 minutes to make sure we got the win,” Zelinski said.
Bayfield, which beat Salida 3-2 on Friday in its home and season opener, now is 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Intermountain League.
BHS will continue IML play this weekend with a pair of home games against Ridgway at 4 p.m. Friday and Telluride at 11 a.m. Saturday, both games at Wolverine Country Stadium.
Alamosa beat Ridgway 5-1 and Telluride 1-0 already this season.
“Ridgway is always tough, and Telluride is always good,” said Zelinski, who sees the Miners as their best IML competition this season.
“But we’re not overlooking anybody.”
