And the West is History

100 years ago: Some advertised food prices included creamery butter for 35 cents, ranch butter for 40 cents, eggs for 40 cents, potatoes for $1.50, flour for $4.90-$5.20, sugar for $9-$9.20, ham for 25 cents, 4 pounds of apples for 25 cents, cranberries for 15 cents, and coconuts for 20 cents.

75 years ago: Sheriff Bruce Sullivan of La Plata County was presented a second opportunity to accept a promotion and move away from the Durango area. Again, he declined the offer and remained in the community.

50 Years Ago: There was a sudden decline in building activity in Durango after Dec. 31, and money was tight compared with the previous year of successful, well-funded construction projects. With limited finances, it was time to put new permits on hold and maintain existing structures.

25 years ago: Weather activity in the Animas River valley was a sight to behold. Moisture from warm Gulf of Mexico air collided with cold temperatures from the San Fransisco area, resulting in aggressive snowfall, wind, rolling thunder and a sky illuminated with streaks of lightning.
