100 years ago: “A queer animal believed to be either a doodle bug or the germ which causes pip is on display at Graden’s in the grocery department. The strange monstrosity was found in the potato bin and was captured after a hard struggle.”
75 years ago: “Snow lies on Wolf Creek Pass to the depth of 4 feet. A total of 24 inches of snow is on Red Mountain. Constant plowing by maintenance crews has kept all the main highways open, though the use of chains on cars is advised.”
50 years ago: “Snow came down in fat, wet flakes to give Durango 0.05 inch of precipitation. ... W.W. (Billy) Davies, Durango’s veteran weather observer, says, ‘I look for the weather to kind of break tonight. But that’s only a guess.’ Davies is a good guesser. He’s been watching the weather in the area since before the turn of the century. It probably could be called an educated guess.”
25 years ago: “Unless additional funding materializes, anymore surprises costing over $100 in the construction of the Durango Community Shelter may halt the projects. ... Unforeseen expenses due to structural problems and an eight-week delay in moving the building from its original location on Second Avenue may keep the facility from opening its doors until the middle of January.”
