100 years ago: “A.K. Berkey has resigned as mayor of Eureka because he does not care to be known as the official boss of a ‘dry’ town, according to advices received in Durango by long distance telephone. ... It is rumored that he plans making a tour of all ‘wet’ territories in the state.”
75 years ago: “Jim Jarvis was buying new gloves preparatory to taking off in the deep snow to reach his sheep camp on the La Plata River west of Marvel. Jim says there is lots of snow on his sheep range, but that a considerable browsing area is exposed near the river. Feeding is also being resorted to help the sheep along.”
50 years ago: “Official dedication of the Purgatory ski area will be Jan. 8. Gov. John Love will be the principal speaker. A number of nationally known skiers have indicated that they plan to attend.”
25 years ago: The Gaslight Twin, 102 5th St., was showing “The Godfather Part III” starring Al Pacino. The billing read, “All the power on earth can’t change destiny.”
