100 years ago: “Nineteen cars of cattle consigned to the Eastern markets passed through Durango from Dolores.”
75 years ago: “It wasn’t the old pine tree of the ballad that they cut down, but one of the big cottonwoods on the Whittier school property in North Durango. Because of the size of the tree, it has been necessary to dismantle the tree piecemeal.”
50 years ago: “Don’t set your clocks ahead today, it’s not the time yet. Colorado does not go off daylight saving time until midnight Oct. 30. The grapevine says many people were late to work today because they misunderstood the time of changing the clocks. They were a month early and we will have one more month of daylight in the evenings.”
25 years ago: “Mountain bike racer Markus Rainer has been released from Mercy Medical Center and is recovering from plastic surgery at the home of Larry and Amy Malick. Rainer, 18, crushed his face bones in a nighttime head-on bicycle collision on U.S. Highway 550 during the World Mountain Bike Championships. He collided with an 18-year-old Japanese competitor and his injuries have prevented him and his coach, Harti Leitner from returning home.”
