1st loss of season for FLC women’s lacrosse

The Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season Sunday afternoon, 11-9 to Regis University at Dicks Sporting Goods Park in Denver. The loss evens the Skyhawks’ overall record at 1-1.

Regis scored four goals in the first half before Ellie Carpenter put the Skyhawks on the scoreboard with 10:39 left in the half. The Rangers scored again at 3:21, but the Skyhawks’ Carly Smoke cut the lead to 5-2 with 2:07 left in the half. A Ranger goal with 22 seconds left gave RU a 6-2 lead at halftime.

The Skyhawks came out of the break with a flurry, scoring four consecutive goals in eight minutes to knot the score at 6. Taylor Cabrera netted back-to-back goals before Rebecca Miller and Brooke Galle scored their first goals of the game. Galle’s goal tied the game for the Skyhawks at 22:50.

Regis regained the lead at 22:13 before Sara McMahon recorded her fourth goal of the season at 15:25 to tie the game at 7, and Jam Vertner gave the Skyhawks their first lead, 8-7, with 11:37 remaining.

But the Rangers answered with four consecutive goals of their own to take an 11-8 lead with 3:43 remaining. Carpenter scored her second goal of the game with 1:42 left for the final margin.

Carpenter led the FLC offense with five shots. Cabrera and Galley each added three shots. Katlyne Duffey picked up three ground balls and goalkeeper Alyssa Spencer made seven saves in 46 minutes.

The Rangers’ Emily Behr scored six goals on 14 shots and assisted on two others.

Fort Lewis will play at Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday and at Adams State on Sunday.
