I noticed that neither the article, “Durango to focus inward on existing projects, services in 2025” (Herald, Jan. 5), nor the editorial, “Significant issues to engage in 2025,” (Herald, Jan. 5.), mentioned better integrating Three Springs with the rest of the city.
A current project to do this is completing the trail connection between the Animas River Trail at Home Depot and the Three Springs trail under the Wilson Gulch overpass that has been on the books for at least 15 years.
With the completion of new the U.S. Highway 160/550 project, it has become more dangerous for nonmotorized traffic between Three Springs and central Durango. Vehicle traffic has increased on the Wilson Gulch ramp eastbound, and the U.S. 160 shoulder was greatly narrowed to lengthen the acceleration lane from the U.S. 160/550 ramp westbound. This trail connection needs to be completed for safety and to better link the two disconnected parts of town.
Without the city committing to complete the trail connection or other Three Spring projects, I will oppose reauthorization of the 2005 sales tax that will appear on the April ballot and will encourage my Three Springs neighbors to do the same.
