Right off the top I want to acknowledge the efforts of three area golfers who traveled to Bernalillo, N.M., a few days ago to attempt to qualify for the upcoming U.S. Open through the Sun Country Sectionals: Keenan Holt, Devin Schreiner and Shea Sena.
Holt, Schreiner – Durango High School alumni – and Sena – a Montezuma-Cortez High School alumnus – competed on the Twin Warriors Golf Club layout along with 37 other hopefuls. Although the threesome did not make the top two qualifiers, it is an honor just to give it a shot to see if you can make the cut and compete at one of the majors in June.
The first of many golf equipment Demo Days at Hillcrest Golf Club, the first from Ping, is 3-7 p.m. Friday at the clubhouse. There also will be an Iron Retro Fit early Friday for those who want to see if their irons truly fit. If adjustments to your irons are needed, there will be a reduced fee of $3 per club for this service.
Check with the pro shop for more details.
There will be three more scheduled manufacturer Demo Days later this month, and I will give you plenty of notice to get the latest skinny on the hottest new equipment.
Another reminder about registration day for the 2013 Junior Camp No. 1 at Hillcrest. Registration will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday in the clubhouse. The cost is $45 per junior, with an optional two-week range pass for $20.
We welcome results this season from the Dalton Ranch Golf Club Women’s Golf Association as they held their first play day on a windy Wednesday – May 1 at DRGC. June Lowrey and Diane Curti tied for low-gross honors at 99, and Amy Brunvand won low net at 72. Cindy Kring finished runner-up at 74.
There remains time for women to sign up for the Team Play on May 16 at Conquistador in Cortez. Sign-up sheets are in the ladies locker room at Dalton Ranch.
The Durango Foundation for Educational Excellence Tournament will be held May 17 at Dalton Ranch.
