A first win again eludes BHS girls

This season’s first win hasn’t come yet, but progress continues to show for the Bayfield High School girls basketball team.

BHS lost 50-29 at Alamosa (3-7, 2-0 IML) on Tuesday to open Intermountain League play.

It was the Wolverines’ ninth consecutive loss to start the season.

“We’ve been playing very tough competition in our pre-league season. I’m hoping that’s going to make us tougher,” BHS head coach Bri Simbeck said. “We were dealt a bad card having to travel in the middle of the week.”

That didn’t bother Aspen Pinnecoose, who finished with 12 points, six rebounds and four steals.

“Aspen stepped up for us tonight, but we need to have more than one person step up in a game,” Simbeck said.

Maddie Duran and Jessie Roukema both scored four points for BHS, and Roukema led the team with eight rebounds.

Senior Tory Tate scored her first career varsity points on a late 3-pointer.

“I’m seeing good progress out of all of us,” Simbeck said.

Bayfield’s next chance for win No. 1 will be 5:30 p.m. Friday at Monte Vista.
