A lack of fire cools FLC’s bats

Two runs in two games against Metro State weren’t enough for the Fort Lewis College softball team Saturday.

The Skyhawks lost 2-1 and 9-1 in Denver to extend their season-long losing streak to five games.

“Our bats just never really got hot (Saturday),” FLC head coach Kira Zeiter said.

Jeovanna Rios got FLC (21-21, 17-13 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) off to a fine start with a home run in the top of the second inning.

Neither team scored for the next two frames until Metro State (22-10, 16-7 RMAC) put two across the plate in the bottom of the fifth on a Kaylynn Harmon double and a Mary Towner single.

FLC couldn’t get anything going after that.

Victoria Johnson took the loss for the Skyhawks, while Aubree Maul got the win for Metro State.

The Roadrunners put up eight of their nine runs in the first two innings of Game 2.

Chelsea Brew led Metro State with three runs batted in and hit a home run.

Rios singled to score Missy Fundora in the top of the third inning to give the Skyhawks their only run of the game.

“Metro came out with a lot of fire,” Zeiter said. “They put up five runs pretty quick. Our pitchers really settled in after that, and we were able to hold them much more closely.”

The two losses dropped FLC to seventh place in the RMAC standings.

The Skyhawks had a chance to move into fourth last weekend when they played Colorado Mesa.

“We take every game one at a time. You can’t ever look forward, and you’re not able to look back,” Zeiter said. “You have to be right there in the present.”

FLC will get another shot at the Roadrunners at 11 a.m. Saturday in Denver.
