Down goes Rollins

FLC women’s lacrosse upsets the country’s No. 11 team in Denver

The third time was the charm for the Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse team when it came to facing ranked teams.

FLC (6-6) beat No. 11 Rollins College (Winter Park, Fla.) 6-4 on Saturday in Denver.

Caroline Lamere scored 2 minutes, 59 seconds into the game, but FLC responded with goals by Ellie Carpenter and Brook Wineland to take a 2-1 lead.

Rollins’ Angelica Perdomo knotted the game at two with 15:25 remaining in the first period.

The Skyhawks scored four consecutive goals to take a 6-4 lead with 11:50 left in the game.

Rollins scored twice after that, but FLC held on for its second consecutive win after a four-game losing streak.

“It was awesome. (Saturday), the overall game was a definite team win. On offense, we did a really good job of possessing the ball and being patient and executing,” FLC head coach Kelsey MacDonald said. “If we did turn the ball over, our attack and our midfield worked their butts off to get the ball back. Our defense came up with some great stops.”

Durango High School alumna Alyssa Spencer made six saves for FLC.

Ellie Carpenter led the Skyhawks with two goals and grabbed three of the game’s 12 draw controls. Abby Kvidera, Ally Kvidera and Kylie Smith also scored for FLC.

“It was great to see us put together a full game of lacrosse,” MacDonald said. “That’s what we’ve been striving to do all year.”

FLC next will play Regis on Saturday, but the place and time will depend on how much snow the Denver area gets.

They’ll play at 10 a.m. at Regis if the Rangers’ field is clear, and the game will be at 2 p.m. at the University of Denver if it does snow because its field gets plowed.

“It’s great to come off a good win that you played as a team and put together everything we’ve been working on all week,” MacDonald said. “Now we can go into that next game with that confidence. I’m excited.”
