The Fort Lewis College cross country team held its own at the Joe Vigil Open on Saturday in Alamosa.
The 20th-ranked men’s team finished third, while the unranked women’s team finished second.
Adams State won both events in its backyard. The men’s team is ranked first and the women’s team second nationally.
“They were pretty dominant, as usual,” FLC head coach Mark Dutro said.
Six women finished under 20 minutes for the Skyhawks, and eight were under 20:05, according to Dutro, after only four FLC women broke the 20-minute barrier last season.
Exact results weren’t immediately available, but freshmen William Scoggins and Madeigh Winsor, a Durango High School product, impressed Dutro.
“We got a strong performance out of two freshmen that we were hoping would be a big part of our program,” said Dutro, who used to coach Winsor while he was head coach at DHS.
FLC will return home Saturday for its annual Tom Strandt Memorial Color Run on the Skyhawks’ campus, although the “color” portion is new to the program’s signature event.
