DHS strong at Joe Vigil Open

Demons’ boys finish 1st, girls 2nd, as they run toward home

Alastair McMillan and Shannon Maloney led the Durango High School cross country team to a first-place finish in the boys event and a third-place finish in the girls meet.

McMillan ran a career-best 16 minutes, 44 seconds, while Maloney finished third overall in the girls race in 18 minutes, 58 seconds, one spot ahead of teammate Hannah Peterson.

McMillan was the Demons’ No. 1 runner after running third for DHS at the season-opening Cheyenne Mountain Stampede last week in Colorado Springs.

The Demons’ boys team outpaced rival Palmer Ridge by 10 points, while the girls were five points out of first place.

Nick Turco ran 16:50, Gordon Gianniny 16:55, Joe Crawford 17:10, Trent Andrews 17:14, Benjamin Lachelt 17:27 and Seamus Millett 17:30.

McMillan, Turco and Gianniny all bettered their time from last season at the same event.

“It was fun to run a course like this early in the season and get the kids some confidence,” DHS head coach David McMillan said.

Peterson ran 19:30, Sarah Bates 20:11, Katerina Seibert 21:14, Marley Weaver-Gabel 21:15; Emily Fogel 21:17 and Maggie Wigton 21:37.

“We’ve got some work to do,” McMillan said. “We need to close the gap between our two- and three-runners, and four through seven needs to move up; they need to start higher up in the field.”

DHS will co-host the Southwest Challenge on Saturday, Sept. 14, with Bayfield High School, which also ran Saturday in Alamosa. Results were not yet available from the meet.
