DHS volleyball splits in Silver Creek

Demons open a new era with an ‘unbreakable’ mantra

The Durango High School volleyball team opened the season under interim head coach Colleen Keresey at the Silver Creek Tournament on Saturday in Longmont, earning a split in four matches.

The Demons (2-2), ranked No. 10 in the CHSAANow.com poll in Class 4A, fell to Silver Creek 25-10, 25-19 before pulling out a win over Evergreen 27-25, 25-17. Durango then went three sets to top Mullen 25-22, 16-25, 15-6 before falling to Sterling 25-22, 25-20.

The teams played a best-of-three-sets format to keep matches shorter in the tournament format.

It was Keresey’s first weekend as head coach after longtime head coach Robin Oliger was fired last month. Senior Gaby Razma said the dismissal was a bit jarring but that the Demons have found a way to overcome.

“That was really a shock to us, but I think we’ve been working through it really well,” Razma said in a phone interview. “Colleen has done a great job taking over the head coach position.”

Fellow senior Mikayla Montoya added that team unity has been a key factor in keeping the ship pointed in the right direction.

“Our slogan this year is ‘unbreakable,’ and I just think that that in itself means a lot,” she said.

Jessie Brammer said she’s excited for the possibilities a roster with a fair share of new players brings. But there always are things to fix.

“I think we need to focus more on serving, probably,” Brammer said.

DHS will play the Cherry Creek Tournament next Saturday.
