American heroes deserve better coverage

I’m disappointed in The Durango Herald for, in my opinion, disrespecting our local military and first responders three times in the past month:

A first responder (fireman, if I remember correctly) was recently honored for his twice heroic actions, and I had to read about it in a “Talk of the Town”-type article on a back page?

Reporting of the May 19 parade honoring local fallen officers was on page 2 and included no photos?

And the “final nail in the coffin,” if you will, was that the May 30 reporting of local Memorial Day events was only worthy of page 3 reporting? Seriously?

The important story consuming page 1 that day was “The Smiley Building.” While I’m actually in awe of the renovations (and kudos to them), that story could have waited one more day. Honoring local heroes who died defending our great nation and way of life should be front and center on the Memorial Day edition, not relegated to page 3.

Reality checks: Freedom of speech rights exist because Americans died providing them. When threatened, you dial 911 and first responders rush into flying bullets, burning structures, etc, knowing they might die or be witness to horrific trauma affecting them for life. Their courage and integrity is second to none. So please, Herald, show these folks respect and honor their service with the front page coverage they deserve.
