An Olympic champion abroad, club champs at home

It took just 40,880 days to bring the sport of golf back to the Olympics, and think what we have missed from the first encounter back in 1904.

Gone are wooden shafts, coats and ties, tin cups instead of beverage carts, and there was no one shouting the stupid phrase “get in the hole” after every tee shot! Ah, the good old days.

But, the return of golf to the 31st Olympiad was a thrill right down to the final hole as a Rose is a Rose is a Rose, and England’s Justin Rose proved to those no-shows how special it is to stand up for your country on the podium alongside Sweden’s Henrik Stenson and Matt Kuchar of the United States. There were plenty of goose bumps to go around.

Now, onto Japan four years from now, and let’s hope the powers to be at the IOC have the backbone to keep golf in the mix for decades to come.

Congratulations goes out to Colorado Springs PGA Professional and longtime participant in the Navajo Trail Open Mike Northern, who captured the 2016 Colorado Senior PGA Professional Championship Tuesday in Lafayette. Northern shot a two-day score of 10-under-134 and will lead a contingent of seven players in mid-November to the 2016 Senior PGA Professional Championship in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Club Championships

Club Championship tournaments spill over to this weekend at both Dalton Ranch Golf Club and Hillcrest Golf Club.

The Dalton Ranch Golf Club Men’s Club Championship will be contested Saturday and Sunday, and the Ska Brewing-Hillcrest Club Championships for men and women will also occupy Saturday and Sunday. Year-long bragging rights go to the winners of these events, and the competition will be fierce again this year.

Hillcrest Golf Club

Looking ahead on the tournament calendar, we find the First National Bank 1-2-3-4 Person Best Ball event Sept. 3rd at Hillcrest. There is $500 in added prize purse and an entry fee of $50 per person. You can choose your own partner providing there is no greater than an eight-stroke handicap differential between partners. Ninety-percent handicaps will be used with flights, net only. Sign up today at the Hillcrest pro shop, or call 247-1499.
