And the West is History

100 years ago: Mrs. H.Z. Owens arrived in Durango from Mancos to retrieve her husband who had been in hospital recovering from severe breaks and bruises that were inflicted when his right arm was caught in a compressor belt a month prior.

75 years ago: Twelve local firms were pooled together by contracting representative Jack Lee in an effort to organize the war production board for machine works contracts completed by Durango shops.

50 years ago: The Denver and Rio Grande Western railroad released a statement that threatened abandonment of the freight line to Alamosa and Farmington.

25 years ago: The local court held its first-known skier-versus-skier lawsuit as a result of a two-person collision that occurred Christmas Eve at Purgatory Resort. Durango attorney Alan Johnson represented 39-year-old Barbara Wegener of Albuquerque, who suffered multiple fractures to her right leg after she was hit by an out-of-control skier, 19-year-old Jeremy Stinnett of Commerce, Texas.
