And the West is History

100 years ago: A man “on an Indian go-devil” was heading west on 11th Street toward Main Avenue in the oncoming lane and “collided with the side of Mrs. Jim Jarvis.” The rider of the go-devil “lit on the back of his neck, or in other words, he bit the dust.”

75 years ago: A notice was printed that told motor vehicle operators with renewed licenses not to be concerned if they did not receive licenses within 30 days. The motor vehicle department “found it impossible, because of rush of business,” and “automatically extended receipts for another 30-day period.”

50 years ago: County commissioners announced that the mosquito control program had ended in Montezuma County, with good results in Dolores and Mancos. The program applied a granule form of the insecticide Baytex to mosquito-breeding areas in the county.

25 years ago: A black-and-white cat gave birth to three kittens inside the air-conditioning unit at Plaza Pharmacy, 28 Town Plaza.
