The cornerstone was laid for the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, No. 507, in 1925 at Ninth Street and East Second Avenue. Durango Elks Lodge still uses the same building today, at 901 East Second Ave.

100 years ago: An advertisement in Classifieds read: “Wanted – Cook, male, 15 to 25 men – Must be good on meats and baking – a cook, not a barnstormer.”

75 years ago: An advertisement for La Plata Motors, Inc. read: “Mechanics who know your Ford and are experts in greasing any car and using proper greases for each special part of the chassis.”

50 years ago: The head of the location department for Twentieth Century Fox, Lew Tate, was in Durango photographing the Animas Canyon to send pictures back to the main studio in California.

25 years ago: Someone reported to La Plata County Sheriff’s Office that a man, who looked about 25 years old, took a shower fully clothed in a pasture sprinkler in the 33000 block of U.S. Highway 550.
