And the West is History

50 Years Ago: “A resolution to proceed toward condemnation of land adjoining the La Plata Airfield in order to extend the runway and other improvements at the city-county airport was approved by the Durango City Council Tuesday night. Plans are to extend the runway 780 feet to prepare for future use of jet airliners here and to make it possible now for the current airliners to carry full loads in the summer months when heat at this altitude reduces the lift capability of the aircraft.”

25 years ago: “Fort Lewis College defendants in a free speech lawsuit will remain firm in their decision to not allow a Ku Klux Klan member to speak on campus, the college’s president said Thursday. ‘We remain convinced that the appearance of this spokesman for the Ku Klux Klan would constitute an imminent endangerment to the health, safety and welfare of this collegiate community,’ Fort Lewis President Joel Jones said.”
