75 years ago: John Baker, soldier and son of Mrs. W.R. Turner of Durango, sent his mother a letter detailing the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He wrote, “I actually saw the attacking planes and thought it was target practice. I watched them dive, and peel off, and come straight down like a bullet – straight through the anti-aircraft fire – but didn’t know it was real until I started bringing in the wounded.”

50 Years Ago: Construction of new dormitories at Fort Lewis College has all but ceased because the contractor hasn’t had the proper equipment to carry on work in the present weather conditions, according to Robert Davidson, college engineer.

25 Years Ago: The Blotter reported that the kitchen at the Strater Hotel, 699 Main Ave., had been broken into. An unknown amount of food and items were taken. The cost to repair the door was estimated at $100.
