And the West is History

100 years ago: There was a room with a bath on the north side of town and a restaurant in Ignacio for rent. Also, a pair of spectacles was found and turned into the Herald office for pickup.

75 years ago: Theodore E. Peterson, Durango pioneer and oldest Mason in Colorado at the time, died in his home on the Florida Mesa east of town. Since 1881, he lived in Durango with his wife and 17 children and was one of Durango’s first general contractors and builders, responsible for creating several homes, schools and businesses in the San Juan region.

50 Years Ago: The Fort Lewis College head ski coach received 12 pairs of racing skis from the Head Company Racer Loan Program and seven pairs of racing skis from the Yamaha Ski Company Loan Program.

25 years ago: AKC registered Chow puppies were “ready for Christmas” and up for sale. Among the other pets for sale were boxer puppies, Christmas canaries (colors galore, guaranteed singers), Christmas chocolate Lab puppies, exceptional hybrid wolf puppies, Lab retrievers and mini-pot-bellied pigs.
