The cornerstone was laid for the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, No. 507, in 1925 at Ninth Street and East Second Avenue. Durango Elks Lodge still uses the same building today, at 901 East Second Ave.

100 years ago: Archuleta County resident William South killed a male gray wolf with his six-shooter while riding a horse at the West and Hott ranch in Pagosa Springs.

75 years ago: Mrs. M. B. Stone hosted “the Ladies of the United Methodist Aid” for a boat ride and potluck dinner at her Electra Lake home.

50 years ago: Rapp W. Gawthrop of Mancos, according to a report from Colorado State Patrol, hit a bear with his car while passing Cherry Creek campground on U.S. Highway 160. The vehicle sustained moderate damage and “the bear kept going.”

25 years ago: Someone reported to Durango Police Department that a bronze statue, valued at $350, was stolen from Goodman’s Art Supply on east Eighth Street.
