Silver Spur Motel, Restaurant & Lounge opened in May 1953 and quickly became one of Durango’s preeminent hospitality businesses. The venue was a popular destination for both visitors and locals. It hosted the famous Hollywood actors John Wayne, Robert Ryan and Jimmy Stewart as they filmed in the region. The restaurant was especially known for its chicken dinners. Located at 3416 Main Ave., the Silver Spur was sold in 2001 and demolished in 2002 to make room for the current La Campanella townhome project. – Ed Horvat for Animas Museum, edhorvat@animasmuseum (Catalog Number: 03.53.25 from the La Plata County Historical Society Photo Collections)
