Apology to Superintendent Cheser and school district

The article “We’re keeping people alive: Inside the warming center” (Herald, Jan. 28) focused on the warming center at Sacred Heart Parish Hall. While the focus of the article was on the guests, numerous statements regarding the school district and Superintendent Karen Cheser allegedly profiling the homeless were ascribed to me.

Those statements were my opinions based on a misunderstanding of Cheser’s statement to the City Council and conversations with another staff member. After rereading that statement and having a conversation with Cheser, I realized I misinterpreted her views, and my opinion was in error. Her concern for the safety of children is paramount, as is her concern for all citizens in our community.

I do not believe Cheser and her staff profile the homeless. I should not have shared that opinion with the Herald because it was in error and thoughtless. I apologize to Cheser and Durango School District for any misunderstanding of their views and for any angst and concern they experienced. That is not who I choose to be – causing discomfort and not being accurate in my opinions.

I also want to share, based on conversations with Cheser and Chris Coleman, the wonderful work and support the district provides to homeless and unhoused children and their families. This is a story the Herald needs to share with the community.

To the superintendent and the school district, please accept my apology for what I communicated.

Mike Todt
