A national juried art show seeks entries

The Farmington Museum at Gateway Park is calling for entries for its Gateway to Imagination – A National Juried Art Competition.

The deadline to enter artwork is March 14. All media will be accepted, and the competition is open to artists ages 18 and older. Entries can be submitted at www.fmtn.org/museums or by mail to the Farmington Museum at Gateway Park, 3041 E. Main St., Farmington, 87401. The cost of entry is $35 for a total of two works of art. To enter, artists must fill out an entry form and submit digital images of artwork created after January 2014.

The show will open May 9, and artwork will remain on display at the Farmington Museum until July 11. The show will award $2,750 in cash prizes.

Durango Film festival announces events

Durango Film – An Independent Film Festival will take place March 4-8 with about 100 films competing for awards in animation, documentary, family, live action and narrative genres.

The festival features parties for passholders and free movie events for the public, along with a Craft Beer and Culinary Crawl, which will showcase appetizer and beer pairings at various downtown Durango galleries and restaurants.

Businesses participating in the crawl include Ska Brewing Co., Eolus Bar & Dining, BREW Pub & Kitchen, Carver Brewing Co., Steamworks Brewing Co., Open Shutter Gallery, El Moro Spirits and Tavern, Toh-Atin Gallery, Durango Brewing Co. and Lost Dog Bar & Lounge.

The Durango Film schedule includes:

Festival Kick-Off Party, 4-6:30 p.m. March 4 at The Palace Restaurant, 505 Main Ave.

Free Movie Night, 6:30, 7 and 9 p.m. March 4 at Gaslight Theatre, 102 E. 5th St.

Native American Film Reception, 4:30-6:30 p.m. March 5 at Sorrel Sky Gallery, 828 Main Ave.

Craft Beer and Culinary Crawl, 5:30-8 p.m. March 5 throughout downtown Durango.

Durango Arts Center announces programs

Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave., announces these programs:

A Kids’ Acting Class will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays from Feb. 16 to April 15. The program is open to students in grades 6 to 9.

Through acting games, activities and improvisation, students will learn basic techniques of acting. Students will be cast in scenes and/or a one-act play to be performed at the end of the session.

The cost is $200 for center members and $225 for nonmembers.

Space is available for the Encaustics art class with Michael Billie from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Feb. 21-22. The cost is $195 for members and $225 for nonmembers.

Encaustic painting is a technique of painting with beeswax mixed with pigments and a resin. Students will learn how to make their own wax mediums and mix colors.

Topics also include using a hot box, embedding objects and fusing.

A $10 materials fee can be paid directly to the instructor on the day of the workshop.

Auditions for the musical “Rent” will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 28 and from 6 to 9 p.m. March 2.

Participants should prepare a 32-bar song and an optional monologue. Accompaniment is available, if needed.

Performances are scheduled for Aug. 20-22, 27-29 and Sept. 11-13, 18-20.

Yoga unifies the body; writing the container

A writing and yoga retreat with Joy Kilpatrick and Rachel Turiel will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 27, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 28 and March 1 at Inhabit, 1970 East Third Ave.

Yoga unifies the body and mind, opening people to deep insights, while writing provides a container for this wisdom. In this retreat, there will be alternating sessions of writing and yoga designed for practitioners of any level.

‘American Denial’ discusses class war

The Powerhouse and Rocky Mountain PBS will present a preview screening of “American Denial” at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

“American Denial” explores the impact of unconscious biases around class and race, using Gunnar Myrdal’s 1944 investigation of Jim Crow racism.

The Durango Community Relations Commission, Fort Lewis College’s Office of Diversity Programming, the Native American Center and Common Ground will facilitate a conversation after the film.

Audience members are invited to take an online “implicit bias” test at https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/user/agg/blindspot/tablet.htm.

The group will discuss what can be done consciously at a cognitive level to overcome or override hidden bias.
