DAC series teaches dance, acting

The Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave., announces its adult performing arts “Saturday Series” featuring local specialists and artist instructors working in theatre. Each “Saturday Series” workshop costs $34 for DAC members and $40 for nonmembers and runs Saturdays in October and November.

Senior Fort Lewis College theatre student Leah Brewer will lead “Viewpoints: An inspiring approach to creating theatre” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 7.

Viewpoints training is a method that helps artists create and talk about performance. This workshop will go over the very basics of Viewpoints technique: exploration of space and time, improvisational movement and speaking, and ensemble building. The workshop is suitable for all levels of experience and can be helpful to actors, choreographers, directors, designers, dramaturgs and writers.

In her time at FLC, Brewer has performed in “Sun and Room,” “Dead Man Walking” and “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and served as assistant director on “Avenue Q.”

Art Career Theorem program available

For artists looking to create a successful art life, there is a new resource available for their creative toolbox. ACT, or Art Career Theorem, is a visually-facilitated model based on the color wheel to support artists working in all disciplines with art career development.

Artist Heather Leavitt Martinez uses graphic facilitation to coach artists through a series of self-assessments and exercises that increase self-awareness and guides artists to set values-based goals, make decisions and sustain the arts life they want to live. Participants can reserve a space in one of the upcoming workshops: “ACT 101: The Foundation” (and prereq) on Oct. 24 and “ACT Applied: Market Your Art” on Oct. 25. Both classes will be held in Mancos.

To enroll, visit www.SchooloftheWest.org. The last day to enroll is Saturday. For more information, visit www.ArtCareerTheorem.com or email heather@heathermartinez.com.
