Those organized to oppose Ascent Classical Academy have a lot of time on their hands. Probably due to the fact that the majority of these political activists don’t have children in the school district. Why would people with no children have such strong opinions about a school that they slander, incorrectly, as Christian from coming to Durango? These self-proclaimed political activists, including an outright Antifa supporter, will take up any cause they find aligns with their far-left views. Meanwhile, the rest of us in the middle of the political spectrum are asking for more choice in our schools.
Lies have been peddled by these politically motivated individuals about Ascent “seeming like a Christian school.” Charter schools are state-funded and, therefore, cannot by law be religiously affiliated. These political actors also point to the connection to Hillsdale College. Ascent will be a licensed user of the K-12 curriculum. That is the extent of the relationship. Why are these activists so intent on stopping school choice? Why are they intent on denying the underserved community, minority and low-income students, the chance to thrive in a traditional school environment?
The curriculum is spelled out on Ascent’s website for all to see. What you will find is a school dedicated to teaching children math, literature, history, how to be virtuous individuals and how to form an argument without resorting to lies and slander! If being virtuous is equated to religion, then we have all lost.
