Bad innings foil the Skyhawks

Skyhawks drop both games of a Day 1 doubleheader in Canyon, Texas

One bad inning hurt the Fort Lewis College softball team in both games of its doubleheader Friday in Canyon, Texas.

The Skyhawks lost 7-5 to Texas A&M-Kingsville but only gave up two earned runs. They committed four errors in the game, and Kiley Raica – the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week – received the loss.

FLC led 4-1 after five innings but gave up six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

“That was a tough inning,” FLC head coach Kira Zeiter said. “When the hits for the other team fall in those spots, you have to make an adjustment to find a way to stop the bleeding.”

Destinee DeHerrera, Chelsea Rodriguez and Adriana Rosthenhausler all had two hits for FLC.

It was the bottom of the seventh that hurt the Skyhawks in their second game against Eastern New Mexico.

FLC (3-4) lost 3-2 after three consecutive hits to the right side of the infield broke a 2-2 tie and ended the game.

Olivia Goldberg took the loss after relieving Raica in the circle.

Rosthenhausler went 2-for-3 and hit a two-run double in the fifth inning to produce both of the Skyhawks runs.

“We’ve been getting on top of teams and getting on the board first,” Zeiter said. “We just need to not give up any extra chances and continue to put up runs throghout the game to keep the intensity up.”

FLC will play Angelo State at 2 p.m. Saturday and host West Texas A&M at 4 p.m. Day 2 of the three-day tournament.
