Ballot takes shape as election deadlines approach

Four local items on this year’s ballot
Colorado has no deadline for voter registration.

Election Day is fast approaching, with several deadlines between now and Nov. 8 that voters and political entities need to know.

La Plata County Clerk and Recorder Tiffany Lee Parker reported that local governments and school districts are ahead of the Sept. 9 deadline to submit ballot content, as she has received all local initiatives.

They include mill levy increase proposals for the Bayfield School District, Durango School District 9-R, county road and bridge infrastructure and the Durango-La Plata County Airport.

The state will certify ballot content by Sept. 12, and the Colorado secretary of state has until 5 p.m. to deliver the ballot certification.

Sept. 23 is the last day for individuals and issue committees to submit written comments on local ballot items. Designated election officials will compile the comments into statements for a proposed tax increase notice distributed to local households on Oct. 7.

Sept. 24 is the last day to submit ballots to voters overseas and in the military. Parker said there are just over 300 this year.

Ballots will be mailed Oct. 17, which is also the last day to register through the Voter Registration Drive. Colorado has no voter registration deadline, so citizens have opportunities to register online, by mail or in person at the election office. However, Oct. 25 is the last day the election office can mail ballots. Voter service centers will open Oct. 24 in Bodo Industrial Park at 98 Everett Street, Suite C, in Durango, and at Bayfield Town Hall at 1199 Bayfield Parkway.

Voting dates, times and locations as well as precinct information can be found on the La Plata County website.

As of this week, there are 33,338 active, registered voters, though that figure will be in constant flux up to Election Day. So far, registration numbers aren’t out of the ordinary, even with the presidential election looming, Parker said.

“I think it’s pretty consistent,” she said. “But we are seeing people registering that have never voted before.”
