Bayfield basketball teams split varsity contests with Dove Creek

BHS boys end streak of OT losses, beat Dove Creek by 15

After consecutive overtime losses, the Bayfield High School boys basketball team enjoyed a comfortable 54-39 victory at home Tuesday night against Dove Creek.

No players from Bayfield (5-6, 2-5 3A Intermountain League) scored in double digits, but nine different Wolverines scored. Crosby Edwards led the way with nine points, Quintan Hunter added eight and Isaac Ross had seven. Hunter Bayles, Kacey Chandler, Cade Carlson and Landon Kennedy all had six points.

Dove Creek (6-5, 5-2 2A/1A San Juan Basin League) got 10 points from Hayden Gray and 13 from Kade Hankins.

The Bulldogs will close the regular season with home games Thursday and Saturday against Ignacio and Dolores.

Bayfield will hit the road for a pair of IML games against Monte Vista and Centauri on Friday and Saturday.

Girls Basketball

A scoreless first quarter was too much for the Bayfield High School girls basketball team to overcome Tuesday night.

The Wolverines fell behind 16-0 after one quarter at home against Dove Creek, and the visiting Class 1A Bulldogs would go on to claim a 47-27 victory to remain undefeated at 11-0 and 6-0 in the 2A/1A San Juan Basin League. Dove Creek entered the game ranked No. 13 in the latest Class 1A poll.

Grace Hatfield scored eight first-quarter points for Dove Creek and would finish with 20 for a game-high.

Bayfield (1-10, 1-6 3A Intermountain League) got 12 points from Madison Wells and seven from Cayanne Carlson.

The Wolverines will complete their season with league games Friday and Saturday on the road against Monte Vista and Centauri, respectively.

Dove Creek will clash with Ignacio at 4 p.m. Thursday at home before a 1:30 p.m. home finale against Dolores.
