Bayfield boys basketball battles back against Navajo Prep

Wolverines earn a needed win

In need of a bounce-back win, the Bayfield Wolverines got what they needed Saturday.

The Bayfield High School boys basketball team earned a 62-47 home win against Navajo Prep of Farmington.

“We did enough to get the job done,” BHS head coach Jeff Lehnus said.

Taed Heydinger led the Wolverines (3-6, 0-1 Class 3A Intermountain League) with 20 points, and sophomore Ryan Phelps added 17 points. Lehnus also highlighted the play of senior Zach Kujath, who scored eight points off the bench.

Navajo Prep led 27-25 at halftime before the Wolverines found their footing.

“It took us awhile to get going after playing (Friday night) and having that tough loss,” Lehnus said, referencing the team’s lopsided loss to Alamosa to begin the league schedule. “Defensively, we were much better in the third quarter and started connecting on some things we needed to do offensively. We finished solidly after that.”

BHS battled early foul trouble but managed to clean it up in the second half.

The Wolverines will look to build some momentum next week with games against Mancos and Monte Vista on Tuesday and Friday, respectively.
