Bayfield boys soccer’s road struggles continue

Wolverines drop back-to-back road matches this past weekend

The Bayfield boys soccer team’s recent struggles on the road continued over the weekend.

The Wolverines lost 5-2 this past Thursday at Grand Junction Central, then lost 4-0 this past Friday at Rifle.

Bayfield has gone 1-4-1 since Sept. 15, dropping three of its last four road matches during that span.

Grand Junction Central (3-8) scored three second-half goals against Bayfield, while Rifle (10-2) scored all four of its goals in the first half against the Wolverines.

Bayfield’s Ayden Casillas scored two goals against Grand Junction Central, while GJCHS’s William Rodriguez scored twice.

Rifle’s Luis Mendoza netted the first goal just four minutes into Friday’s match, and Yahir Marquez rocketed a 30-yarder into the net during the 11th minute for a 2-0 lead. Rifle added its final two goals later on the first half.

Bayfield (6-4-1, 2-0-1 in Southwest League play) will host Alamosa (1-10, 1-3 in Southwest League play) at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

“I’m hoping to see in these coming games some more action from Asher (Madonna) and Wyatt (Larson) and Zach (Hufnagel) and Hunter (Ferrell) as they play in the center-mid positions,” Bayfield coach Chris Zoltowski said. “I’m hoping to see them push up, get even more involved in the attack and not leave Ayden (Casillas) alone.”
