Bayfield to host regional volleyball tournament

DHS makes 4A tournament as No. 28 seed

It’s time for the high school volleyball playoffs, and Bayfield, Durango and Ignacio all qualified to compete in the championships.

Bayfield and Ignacio will both get to host a three-team regional tournament, while Durango will travel to Denver.

After finishing 15-8 overall and winning the 3A/2A Intermountain League, Bayfield earned the No. 12 seed for the 3A championships and will host No. 13 Valley (Gilcrest) and No. 25 Colorado Academy (Denver).

The Wolverines won seven of its past eight matches, including a 2-1 win over Montrose Saturday at the Discover Canyon tournament in Colorado Springs. Bayfield also beat Coronado, 2-1 and Air Academy, 2-0 at the tournament, but fell to the hosts and tournament champion 2-0.

Valley will bring a 17-6 record, andColorado Academy will bring a 12-11 mark.

Bayfield will begin the regional by playing Colorado Academy at 9 a.m.

Colorado Academy and Valley will play next. Then Bayfield will return to the court to take on Valley in the final. Only the regional champions advance to the state tournament.

The top four seeds for the 3A tournament are No. 1 Resurrection Christian (Loveland), No. 2 Lamar, No. 3 Lutheran (Parker) and No. 4 University (Greeley).

The Durango Demons, meanwhile, made the 4A playoffs as the No. 28 seed despite losing its last eight matches.

Durango (9-13) will play at No. 9 The Classical Academy-hosted Region 9 championship in Denver along with No. 16 Berthoud.

DHS will play The Classical Academy (21-2) at 9:30 to start the tournament and then take on Berthoud (16-7).

Palmer Ridge (Monument), Cheyenne Mountain (Colorado Springs), Windsor and Thompson Valley (Loveland) scored the top-four seeds in Class 4A.

Ignacio also earned the No. 12 seed in Class 2A and will host No. 13 Union Colony Prep and No. 25 Plateau Valley on Saturday. See related story on page 8A.
