Bayfield volleyball returns to form in sweep at Aztec

Wolverines rebound with sweep in Aztec

The flow has returned to the Bayfield High School volleyball team.

BHS won its second match this week in the greater Farmington area, beating Aztec 3-2 (25-20, 25-20, 25-21) after taking out Farmington 3-1 on Tuesday.

“Everyone got involved. I think our setters are improving. That’s pretty crucial for us,” BHS head coach Terene Foutz said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald on Thursday. We have very young setters – two sophomores at the helm running our offense.”

Courtney Bayles and Sydney Gabbard have both played stretches for the Wolverines in a 6-2 system with both on the floor or individually in separate 5-1 systems.

“They’re stating to think about their distribution and creating one-on-ones for us. As I look back on this match, that was big for us.”

The Wovlerines also kept Aztec off balance from the service line during long point runs.

BHS junior Maddi Foutz led the way with seven aces and also featured in the attack.

“She put a lot of pressure on Aztec from the service line,” coach Foutz said.

After two wins, BHS (4-5) now turns its attention to avenging a tough 3-0 loss at Piedra Vista earlier this year when the Panthers roll into BHS at 6 p.m.

Piedra Vista, one of the top teams in New Mexico’s Class 5A, didn’t allow the Wolverines to score more than 18 in any of the three sets the teams played previously.

“We had a big test against (Piedra Vista) early in the season. I’m sure all the kids wish they could press the reset button that match,” Coach Foutz said. “I don’t think we’re going to repeat that. (Piedra Vista) is going to get a tough match when they get to Bayfileld. I predict a tougher match across the board.”
