The Bayfield High School volleyball team racked up 12 aces as a team, including six in the first set, to set the tone for a league win against Pagosa Springs.
BHS (3-2, 2-2 3A/2A Intermountain League) swept the Pirates (2-3, 0-3 IML) with set scores of 25-12, 25-16 and 25-21.
Melissa Roberts recorded eight of the team’s aces and had 13 kills with a .435 hitting percentage.
“I’ve been working a lot with (coach Terene Foutz) the past couple weeks on improving a simple, straight-to-the-point jump serve,” Roberts said. And, you know, I’ll take my time, relax, I’ll take a few bounces (of the ball) to myself. That’s kind of my time to get it in my head that I can do it. That’s my time; it’s just me and no one else is going against me. I just take my time, target where I want, toss it up and I watch my hand hit the ball where I want it. And, of course, that goes not without error, but I think that’s just about the most explaining I can give for my strategy.”
Annie Fusco added 13 kills for BHS, while Macee Schulz had six. Emily Nelson led the Wolverines with 11 digs, and Sage Killough tallied 32 assists.
“I just tried really hard to spread out our offense, get everybody the ball,” Killough said. “Keep it flowing and fast.”
BHS will travel Saturday a short distance to Durango High to face Cedaredge at 1 p.m.
