The Durango High School volleyball team turned in a dominant performance at home Friday to stay unbeaten.
Led by seven powerful aces from senior Paige Ammerman, who also led DHS with 19 assists, the Demons took down the Grand Junction Tigers 3-0 with set scores of 25-18, 25-7 and 25-10.
“Our girls controlled the tempo of the game, regardless of who was in there,” said DHS head coach Kelley Rifilato. “Everyone on the team played tonight, and it was nice to rotate three freshmen who all contributed. It was huge. Our seniors have stepped up to be leaders on this team, and they are instilling that in all of our girls.”
Mason Rowland led DHS (4-0, 4-0 5A/4A Southwestern League) with 10 kills. Leah Wesley had 14 digs, and Kyle Rowland added 13. Rifilato said DHS had to create a lot of its own offense through its defense against shorter Grand Junction (0-7, 0-3 SWL) side.
“It was a really strong defensive effort. We had to scramble on defense and create some things for ourselves,” she said.
Durango is first in the league after one rotation through the league schedule with two big five-set wins against Montrose and Fruita Monument.
The Demons will host Cedaredge in their first non-league game at noon Saturday. Then, Bayfield will play Cedaredge (2-2) at 1 p.m. Saturday at DHS.
