BHS girls just ‘couldn’t put the ball in the hoop’

They had a feeling it might go this way.

The Bayfield High School girls basketball team lost to Pagosa Springs 54-20 in the Intermountain League tournament semifinals Friday in Monte Vista.

“Pagosa’s a good team, and they were better than us (Friday night),” BHS head coach Bri Simbeck said. “We couldn’t put the ball in the hoop as much as we needed to.”

Jaida Ross and Carrie Yost led the Wolverines with six points each.

The Pirates now are 20-0 and ranked No. 2 in Class 3A by CHSAANow.com.

The loss slots BHS (7-12) into the IML third-place game against Centauri at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Monte Vista.

Should the Wolverines win, they will be placed in a regional and have the opportunity to qualify for state if they win that regional.

“It definitely motivates us,” Simbeck said. “We knew (Friday night) could go similar to how it did, so we used some of the competition of playing a tough team to motivate us.”
