Three players in double figures led the Bayfield High School boys basketball team to a 57-50 victory over Monte Vista on Friday in Bayfield to open Intermountain League play.
Zane Phelps scored 12, Dillon Hoselton 11 and Preston Hardy 10 to lead the Wolverines to their first 1-0 start in league play since 2010.
BHS (5-4, 1-0 IML) trailed 30-19 at halftime before using an 8-0 run at the beginning of the second half to trim the deficit to single digits.
“They were leaving some things open. The kids went out and executed,” BHS head coach Randy Stephens said. “As things got tight, our conditioning paid off. They got tired, and we kept pushing pretty hard.”
The Wolverines next will play Piedra Vista at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Bayfield, which gives BHS a chance to avenge a loss from earlier in the season.
The Wolverines’ next league game is 7 p.m. Friday at Pagosa Springs.
