One of the coolest additions to Durango’s fundraising schedule returns next weekend for its second outing.
The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado Suitcase Party will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday at the AVFlight private jet hanger at the Durango-La Plata County Airport. Everyone who attends enjoys a distinctive party featuring food by Hot Tomatoes, a signature cocktail made with a Honey House Distillery product (bourbon, spiced rum or vodka?) prepared by El Moro Spirits & Tavern bartenders, who, unfortunately, aren’t needed at the restaurant right now post-fire, music by the Kirk James Blues Band, and, as the headliner, the drawing.
Each event ticket is also a raffle ticket for a three-day getaway leaving that night from the party to a mystery resort destination, complete with plane flight, two-night hotel room and gift card for meals and some fun money. Only 200 tickets will be sold, so the odds can hardly be beat.
In addition to the auction for closer-to-home fun and services, guests will have the opportunity to bid for the remaining seats on the eight-seat plane after the winner or winners claim theirs.
Want to know how to pack for the mystery destination in that suitcase you’re taking to the party? Buy your tickets now – $100 for individuals, $175 for couples – and receive some email tips.
Go early at 5 p.m. for the VIP reception featuring current “Survivor” competitor Ken McNickle, a Denverite who has ties to Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Here’s how to reach me: neighbors@durangoherald.com; phone 375-4584; mail items to the Herald; or drop them off at the front desk. Please include contact names and phone numbers for all items. Follow me on Twitter @Ann_Neighbors.
I am happy to consider photos for Neighbors, but they must be high-quality, high-resolution photos (at least 1 MB of memory) and include no more than three to five people. I need to know who’s who, left to right, and who to credit with the photo. Candid photos are better than posed, and photos should be submitted as JPG or TIF attachments.
