Board defends safety, dignity of all students

The Durango School District Board of Education is profoundly saddened and distressed that two innocent children in our community were tragically denied the fundamental right to safety while en route to their school communities this week.

The board stands united in our unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of every student. We affirm that all community students have the right to safe passage to and from school, regardless of their immigration status, background or identity, and this right must never be compromised.

Our schools, and the routes students travel to reach them, must remain safe, welcoming environments for learning and belonging. We uphold the principle that schools should be protected areas, a concept that reinforces the shared responsibility for student safety across every level of government and community.

Learning cannot happen when students live in fear. We will continue to relentlessly advocate for the safety, dignity and humanity of all children in our community.
