Ignacio High School and Nucla played a competitive 5-4 game April 15, but Friday’s doubleheader wasn’t nearly as close.
The IHS Bobcats (8-9, 3-6 San Juan Basin League) dropped both games of a home doubleheader against the Nucla Mustangs (13-4, 9-0 SJBL) on Friday. IHS dropped the first contest 12-1 and the second game 12-3.
“Nucla really smacked the ball around, and we didn’t have the hitting to get momentum going our way,” IHS head coach Lupe Huerta said.
Iaasic Peña pitched the first game for IHS, and Bo Ward started Game 2.
“They hit Peña hard; he was behind and had to give them good pitches to hit, and I haven’t seen anyone hit him like that before,” Huerta said. “We had a few small errors, but Nucla flat out hit the ball.”
Huerta said Tucker Ward had the most consistent day at the plate, and Antonio Torres reached base several times on walks.
“The offense was all scattered. We couldn’t get much going,” Huerta said.
Huerta was impressed with the play of sophomore left fielder Austin McCaw, who earned his first varsity start Friday.
Ignacio is finished with SJBL games and will finish the regular season with games against the junior varsity teams of Bloomfield, N.M., on Tuesday and Bayfield on Thursday.
“We have just a few games to go, and then we have a week off until districts, so we will be waiting on that,” Huerta said.
